Facilities;
Balie’s Gat is located in the Western Cape province of South Africa around 3 hours drive from Cape Town. The closest town is Op-die-berg.
Balie’s is located in a deep and remote valley in the southern Cederberg. The road to the valley runs through the farm Tandfontein in the Koue Bokkeveld and then winds its way down to the valley floor.
The final stretch of the road into Balie’s is a single track pass. It’s quite scary if you’re afraid of heights but the views are spectacular. Note that you need a high-clearance vehicle to access the property and a 4×4 if you’re towing.
The scenery at Balie’s is fantastic with rock formations and front row seats to the Cederberg mountains.
There is also a little stream flowing through the camp with some rock pools that are great for fishing and swimming.
There are 4 campsites at Balie’s; Boesmansklip, Rietdakkie and Balies 1 and 2.
- Boesmansklip is the best site in my opinion. It has shelter against wind, full-day shade and great access to the stream and rock pools. Campsite has an 8-person minimum booking.
- Rietdakkie is right next to the ablutions, has lawn and half-day shade.
- Baliekamp 1 and 2 are right next to each other, have lawn but no shade aside from rustic gazebo’s
- Boesmansklip and rietdakkie have built-in braai’s and Baliekamp 1 and two, braai drums.
All sites have running water and there is no electricity.
The shared ablutions are neat and clean but only have two toilets and gas-heated showers.
Balie’s is a great escape from the city and a good basecamp to explore the area. I highly recommend the boesmansklip site.
